about

At first blush, the Electro-Harmonix Random Tone Generator does not appear to be a very useful device. It emits a series of regularly timed but untuned bleeps. You can control the speed, in a range I would describe as “not nearly slow enough” to “way too fast”. It also has a portamento-like effect called “glide” you can switch on and off. And that's about it. The challenge to myself was this: what can I make out of this using only some effects pedals and whatever I could wring out of Audacity (a sound editing program). Like just about any piece of musical gear, it turns out that the only limits are your own creativity. And so I present an entire album of Generated Random Tones. (It's also worth noting that the title of this album is also a reference to my friend Allen Bailey's EP “Noise Generator”, which is also available via Bandcamp).
